Effective HR can change a workplace and the world

Have you ever thought about how much of a microcosmos a workplace can be? It’s a tiny world within the world, but it doesn’t have to be disconnected from the real world. When workplaces are actively connected – where knowledge, skills and information are shared – both businesses and the global community can improve and progress.

People in HR can influence the culture of a workplace by creating a more connected and sustainable place for all employees to work and participate. They can help fill a workplace with ‘global citizens’, people who are truly connected. If you’re in HR, you can ultimately change a workplace and the world.

Humans are resources

This might seem like an abstract term, but think about what it really means. ‘Human resources’ refers to the wealth of people’s skills: resources are needed to create anything including successful businesses and global awareness. The two are intrinsically linked.

Businessperson or businessperson?

Businesses cannot function without people, all with different skills and ambitions. The exciting challenge for those in HR is to find the right people to help grow a business. The right mix of people with the right set of ideas can have a huge impact not only on the productivity and achievements of a business, but also on the culture of that business.

Go team!

When people feel connected in the workplace and united in their goals, they are stronger. It’s easier to move a couch with two people. It’s easier to meet a deadline or quota when each person in a team does their job. Job satisfaction is when a business runs like a smooth machine and people know they’re each an essential cog in that machine.

Machines can move mountains

When a team feels strong and happy in their workplace, that strength can be used to make a difference in the world. There are so many small things businesses can do to not only be productive, but to be diverse, sustainable, aware and responsible. Recycling, reducing the waste of resources, community fundraising, considering diversity and respecting people’s personal lives are all small steps towards big results.
